The Passing of L.A. Banks

By now, this is old news, but as some of you know, author Leslie Esdaile Banks (L.A. Banks), the creator of the Vampire Huntress Legend and Crimson Moon series, died on August 2, 2011.

Banks was instrumental in the lives of many African American readers and aspiring authors. She wrote in several different genres, and under a variety of pen names. Banks was diagnose with late-stage adrenal cancer in June 2011, which left her family with immense medical bills.

Memorial services and donations to assist her family have been set.

Taken from WriteBlack.com,

The service will be next Saturday, Aug. 13, at 11 a.m. at Holy Apostles and The Mediator Episopal Church.

The address is 51st and Spruce Streets, Philadelphia, 19139.

Before her death, Banks asked that donations be made to the UNCF in her memory instead of flowers.

Please remember that you may also make donations to a fund set up specifically for the benefit of her family.

L.A. Banks was a huge name in the Speculative Fiction community, and was steadily moving forward with her work. If you pray, please keep her family in your prayers, and if you are able to donate, please do so. She will be missed.

  1. I had just finished “Shadow Walker” and figured I would jump on her website to check out the next release, excited about her writing, and frankly all other books move so slow paced compared to her dialogue in her books to find out she had passed away. I literally started crying, she was such an inspirational writer, that I could only imagine how energetic and spirited she was as a person. I am mourning for a friend I would never get a chance to meet. Her words had brought me company on days that seemed so ordinary and made me look at the extroardinary everyday ocurrences in life, and now i feel a great lose of knowing she is no longer in this world, but i know her soul has only began a journey that will lift the heavens, because there is no doubt in my mind that she is with “On High” til we all get there.
